Tracking Abuse of Preemption Legislation in the States: March 2, 2022
During the 2022 state legislative session Local Solutions Support Center (LSSC) will publish a weekly digest summarizing notable abusive preemption bills and their progress through session. (1) Tracking Weekly Round-Up
The legislative session continues in five of LSSC’s six core states: Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee. LSSC is continuing to work with its local state partners to track and report on abusive preemption bills. We are currently tracking over two hundred (200) bills in these five states.
(2) Updates in Our Top States
GA SB331 (Labor): Would prohibit local governments from passing fair scheduling regulations. The bill has passed the GA Senate and has been introduced in the GA House. The bill is here.
TN HB2316 (LGBTQ+ Athletics): Would require public middle and high schools to require student athletes to participate in school sports based on their biological sex indicated on their birth certificate. If the school did not comply with this requirement, authorities other parents or students a private right of action against the school. The bill is in committee. The bill is here.
FL H0619 (General Preemption): Would require certain local government contracts to include language requiring that certain iron and steel products used in the contract be produced in United States. This bill is up for a House vote. See bill here.
